Dan believes in family and the protection of each member of the family unit. Sometimes disputes involve the death of a loved one, or the breakup of the family relationship. These painful and difficult problems need to be handled by an attorney who cares about all of the people involved and knows how to resolve problems before they reach the court. A skilled attorney can facilitate settlement by suggesting alternatives that sometimes a client cannot see or appreciate because he or she is too involved in the problem and it is too painful to think clearly. Nevertheless, sometimes trial is necessary and serious preparation is a must. Dan is a tough negotiator when the circumstances require it and a formidable opponent in the courtroom. Dan finds it gratifying to help families resolve estate disputes, especially if it allows them to resume a good family relationship. He has learned that when people plan their estates, they really want to do more than avoid taxes and pass their assets to the next generation. Most also want to make sure that the next generation is successful in life and uses the wealth they receive in a positive manner. This requires an attorney who, through careful questioning, can help clients discover what they really want and then offer them some practical alternatives for reaching their goals. It may involve incentive trusts requiring children to reach certain goals before distributions are made, delay of distributions, implementation of tax devices or any of a myriad of other techniques available to an experienced practitioner. Estate planning is one of life's important decisions, and a competent estate planner's experience is critical in this area. Similarly, guiding couples through marital problems also requires steady and competent guidance, either towards reconciliation or an amicable ending to their marriage, especially with children involved. It is important to provide for children's interests, so that all parties can resume their lives as whole, emotionally intact individuals. |
